Building Connection and Community Abroad: Frankfurt’s “Darkness into Light” Initiative Grows Stronger

Toni Gallagher Hudson, a member of our Suir Wellbeing team and organiser of the Darkness into Light walk in Frankfurt, said the event was created to remind employees working abroad that they are never alone. She also took time out to speak with us about organising the event and the importance of creating opportunities for people to come together and support one another.

Having experienced the challenges of moving away from home and adjusting to life in a new country, Toni explained how the support and sense of community within the team helped make Frankfurt feel like home. The annual walk has become an important opportunity for colleagues to connect, support one another and raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. This year’s event saw participation double from last year, with the initiative expanding beyond Suir employees to include members of the wider Frankfurt community. The team at Suir Engineering hope the event will continue to grow in the years ahead, encouraging even more people to get involved, whether through local walks, workplace events or community gatherings.

The team acknowledge that events like Darkness Into Light play a powerful role in strengthening team bonds and workplace culture. Creating opportunities for people to step outside their usual circles, connect with colleagues they might not interact with daily, and share in a meaningful experience.  Participants explained that the early morning gathering in particular, has become a highlight. At its core, the event reinforces an important message: no one is alone.

There is strong encouragement for more employees to get involved in future events. Whether joining an organised walk, hosting a small gathering on-site, or simply bringing a group together in a local park, participation is accessible and impactful. These moments don’t require extensive planning, yet they bring a sense of hope.

Looking ahead, the Frankfurt team has ambitious goals. After successfully doubling participation this year, the focus is now on continued growth and broader community engagement. Future aspirations include deeper collaboration with Pieta and the possibility of establishing an official Darkness Into Light walk for Frankfurt.

Toni stated “Beyond this event, there is a clear message about supporting mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, especially for those living and working away from home. Open communication is key. Reaching out, starting conversations with new people, and embracing unfamiliar experiences can make a significant difference”.
